He became a millionaire in an instant.

But John Major, of Holmfirth, won’t be going down the “spend, spend, spend” route out of control.

His fortune is a million Hungarian Forints – and that’s worth about £2,800 in good old English pounds.

John won the million in a prize draw at Manchester Airport, as part of Travelex’s ‘Win a Million’ prize promotion.

The campaign, which attracted almost 160,000 entries, was launched back in November 2012 by the foreign exchange specialists.

Customers who carried out a trans-action of over £300 with Travelex across the UK were eligible for the chance to win a million of either pounds, Russian Rubles, Japanese Yen, Sri Lankan Rupees or Hungarian Forints.

John Major was randomly selected as a winner and he was invited to choose from the “Win a Million” draw.

The prize draw saw Mr Major choose from 300 envelopes, including one containing the 1 million prize.

He said: “I’m so excited to have won £2,800. I’ve never really won anything before and to have actually won this money today is amazing.

“I’m going to use the money to buy tickets to go back to New Zealand and see my family.”

The Travelex sales consultant who sold Mr Major his winning entry, Oliver East, was also invited to participate in the draw and picked up a million Russian Rubles, or just over £19,000.

He said: “It’s so exciting that I’ve won this money. It was great as well that staff were able to enter too; we were all really behind the promotion.”

Those attending the prize draw included senior members of Travelex and Manchester Airport’s staff, who also attended a celebratory brunch with the winners following the draw.

Elvin Eldic, of Travelex, said: “This was the largest promotion Travelex has run here in the UK. It generated fantastic enthusiasm from customers and colleagues alike so we are absolutely thrilled to see the culmination of that here today”.
