A WOMAN who taught ballroom dancing for years has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Mildred Rocket, of White Rose House, Holmfirth, celebrated her centenary with help from her family and staff from the care centre.

Mrs Rocket was joined by fellow residents of the care centre and was visited by her daughter, Wendy and son-in-law Ray and other members of her family.

She was born in Huddersfield and grew up with her parents and two younger brothers. When she was 18, she moved to London with her mother and brother Frank and found work in a solicitors.

She returned to Huddersfield and married Jack in 1937. They had two children, Wendy and David and Mildred now has seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The couple made a living teaching ballroom dancing. Mrs Rocket was president of the Townswomen’s Guild in Marsh during the 1950s and 60s.

She lived alone until well into her 90s following the death of her husband and would cook a three course meal every Monday, sometimes for 10 people or more.

She lived in sheltered accommodation in Honley for three years before moving to White Rose House four years ago.
