A restaurant is celebrating after winning a competition to keep Holmfirth floral over the summer.

But it was a long, nervous wait for staff at Bengal Spice, Dunford Road, who have only just discovered they had won the Holmfirth In Bloom award.

The Indian and Bengali restaurant scooped first place for its all-year-round displays.

Taking the silver was The Old Bridge Hotel, Market Walk, while the Potters Den, Norridge Bottom, won the bronze.

Bengal Spice, which opened in 2000, won the contest when it started 10 years ago.

The restaurant has entered the competition, sponsored by Kirklees Council, every year since. On the panel, which judged entrants’ premises in August, was Sue Rhodes of Holmfirth Tourist Information Office.

Ms Rhodes said: “They had a wonderful display of pouches. They looked beautiful. Bengal Spice does it all year round and it always looks nice.”

Bengal Spice staff were presented with their trophy by Holme Valley South Clr Nigel Patrick.

Co-owner, Atik Rahman, said: “It’s fantastic to win this award and it’s great for Holmfirth.”
