Councillors have given their full support to a skate park in memory of a Holmfirth boy.

The Skate4Isaac park got formal support from Kirklees Cabinet members today and the extended skate park at Sands Recreation Ground is set to be in place this summer.

The Isaac Atkinson Memorial Fund launched a fundraising drive after the tragic death of the Holmfirth High School boy, who died in 2012 aged 14.

His family, friends and the community worked together to raise £80,000 for improved skate facilities, something Isaac and his friends had started before his death.

Clr David Sheard, council leader, said: “We’ve got to congratulate the Friends group who have done an excellent job raising money for this, bringing together lots of different groups to contribute to make this scheme happen.”

Clr Graham Turner, Cabinet member for Resources, said it was the “right thing for us to do”. Cabinet members’ support comes ahead of the anniversary of Isaac’s death later this month.

As the park is owned by Kirklees Council, the work went before Cabinet for noting. A contractor has been appointed and is ready to start work on site this month.

It will see the skate park extended, benches and litter bins installed and the shelter removed.

Family and friends of Isaac, plus the wider community, have rallied together to raise funds from local causes, including the Freemasons; Huddersfield Pendragon Round Table; Police & Crime Commissioners Office’s Community Safety Fund; Huddersfield Common Good Trust; Kirklees’ Holme Valley Area Committee; Kirklees Council’s Sport in the Neighbourhoods fund; Honley Show Committee; Holme Valley Parish Council and the Rotary Club, together with events held by the Skate4Isaac group.
