HOMEOWNERS struggling to pay their mortgages can apply for help from Kirklees.
The council’s Cabinet yesterday agreed to sign up to the Breathing Space scheme, which provides householders with interest-free loans of up to £15,000.
The three-year loans are available to homeowners struggling to pay their mortgages because of job loss, illness or family breakdown.
Applicants will have to speak to an independent financial advisor before they are given the loan to ensure private sector borrowing options are considered before public money is committed.
Breathing Space started in Yorkshire on September 24 with £2m from central Government.
The Cabinet yesterday agreed to allow Wakefield City Council – which has piloted the Breathing Space scheme – to run the programme in Kirklees.
