FAMILIES fled their houses following an arson attack in their street early this morning
An arsonist struck on Bay Hall Common Road in Birkby at around 5.15am.
The fire was started in a wheelie bin but spread to a nearby house and the gas meter.
Firefighters were worried leaking gas could lead to a huge explosion.
The occupants of five neighbouring houses had to be evacuated while the area was made safe.
