Homes have been evacuated after a van crashed into a gas main.

Several homes on Westfield Lane in Emley have been emptied this morning as a precautionary measure by Northern Gas Network while staff work to repair the damage done when this white Citroen Berlingo panel van ploughed into the structure.

The residents have been offered shelter in nearby Emley Methodist Church.

The stretch of road between Jagger Lane and Lenacre Lane has also been closed to traffic, causing long tailbacks.

According to West Yorkshire Police, the van crashed at 7.07am this morning after it veered off the road and hit the gas main.

Fortunately, no-one was hurt in the incident.

Two fire crews from Huddersfield and Skelmanthorpe are currently at the scene recovering the vehicles.

Other adjoining lanes are at risk of police closure while gas mains work is ongoing.

They are unable to give an indication as to when the road may re-open to traffic.

The 232 Tiger bus service has been forced to divert via the 231 route through Flockton.

The two nearest stops to the affected area are at Grange Moor on Briestfield Road/Liley Lane and in Flockton on Barnsley Road.
