COLNE Valley Labour MP Kali Mountford has spoken out to quell fears over a large housing plan.

She said she did not believe a 300-house estate would be built in Linthwaite - even if planning permission granted years ago was still valid.

Permission for the Crosland Park project was granted in 1974 by the then Colne Valley Urban District Council.

The permission still stands.

Rumours have been circulating that building is to start on the site.

But Ms Mountford said she felt building there was "extremely unlikely".

She added: "I know strong rumours are circulating about house- building being imminent, but Kirklees Council is not aware of any new moves.

"Planning rules have changed so much in 30 years that I believe it will be extremely difficult - if not impossible - for the original plans to be implemented," said Ms Mountford.

"Modern standards on things like terrain, drainage, estate and access roads and the capability of schools to cope with a big influx of children, are all factors which will confront any building firm.

"It would be quite ludicrous, in my opinion, for an estate of this size to be given the go-ahead in this changed planning climate.

"On the information at my disposal I do not believe it will come about.

"I hope my explanation will put to rest the fears among my constituents," she added.
