A DEVELOPER has won the right to build five homes on the site of a former pub.

The Green Dragon Inn closed its doors suddenly in 2009.

The Emley pub was torn down earlier this year.

Planners yesterday gave Clayton West builders P&V Smith permission to erect five homes at the site on the corner of Church Street and School Lane.

Kirklees Council’s Heavy Woollen Planning Sub-committee approved the proposal for four semi-detached and one detached home at the site, each with their own garden, garage and two parking spaces.

Ten residents had written to Kirklees protesting against the plan.

Their complaints included that the development would deprive the village of parking spaces.

But Clr Elaine Ward pointed out: “When the pub was in its heyday the car park was heaving and people were parking down Church Street.”

The Denby Dale Conservative added that the applicant would “certainly” win on appeal if councillors refused permission.

The sub-committee voted to approve the development.
