ALL 180,000 homes in Kirklees could be switched to fortnightly grey bin collections by 2009.

The mass change from once-a-week visits could begin from next April. Green bin collections would be stepped up to encourage people to recycle.

Kirklees Council deputy leader Clr John Smithson said: "If we don't make changes, we won't reach our targets."

The Examiner revealed last week how Almondbury, Dalton and Lepton have been chosen for trials of the new collections.

Councillors will be given a report in October on how well it has gone.

Assistant environment director Steve Noble said: "We are hoping that 50% of properties in Kirklees will be switched over in 2007-2008 and the rest in the following 12 months."
