A man badly injured when a 10-tonne digger rolled over his leg remains in hospital this afternoon - Thursday.

He was crushed by the machine as it was being unloaded from a low-loader trailer at a building site in Honley.

It is believed the injured man is 52 and has serious leg and crush injuries, which police described as “potentially life-changing”.

The man is thought to have been the driver of the articulated lorry and trailer which was delivering the machine.

The badly-injured victim was flown to Leeds General Infirmary by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, which landed on the fields at Honley High School.

Police closed Station Road for several hours after the incident, which happened shortly before 8am this morning.

Inquiries into what happened are now being carried out by police accident investigation experts and scienists.

They are looking at the brakes of the huge machine.

Det Insp Mark Truelove, of Kirklees CID, was at the scene shortly after the tragedy.

He said: “It appears the man was trying to unload the digging machine off the back of the trailer when for some reason it rolled off, crushing his leg.

“The machine then demolished a section of stone wall before coming to rest against a tree.

“The man told people who went to help him that he thought the brakes had failed but that is all now to be investigated.

“Police are carrying out extensive inquiries and we have also informed the Health and Safety Executive, who carry out inquiries into industrial accidents”

Paramedics were called to the scene and gave emergency treatment for the injured man, who had an open fracture to his left leg.

They called in the Yorkshire Air Ambulance which landed at the side of playing fields outside Honley High School.

The man was then flown to Leeds General Infirmary and was detained in the hospital’s resuscitation unit.

The accident happened only a hundred yards from the scene of a tragic accident in February.
