VISITORS to Hopton Playgroup's summer fair got a little hotter than they bargained for - after one of the raffle prizes caught fire!

And unfortunately, the fire engine the group had hired for the day had left earlier for an emergency call-out!

Star attractions on the day, which is an annual event, included a bouncy castle, face painting, hook-a-duck - and the raffle.

The raffle featured more than 30 prizes, one of which was a plastic games set donated by Barclays Bank - and it was that prize that met a sticky end.

Group committee member Marie Morris said: "The fire engine that came for the day was called out on an emergency.

"We had a little emergency on the day - someone put one of the main raffle prizes on top of the cooker without realising it was on.

"We all started to smell and see smoke coming from the kitchen, and realised it was the plastic melting!

"Just as it had been safely removed outside and the smoke was clearing, the pre-booked fire engine and crew arrived!

"We couldn't hide the fact something had gone on as the smoke still filled the air - however they did compliment us on our swift action!"

Fortunately, the rest of the day went perfectly, and Barclays generously donated another raffle prize to replace the melted one.

Joint chair of Hopton Playgroup, Katie Harris, said: "It was a fantastic day, everyone I spoke to had a good time. The Hopton community supported us brilliantly."

The total raised on the day was more than £1,000.

Hopton Playgroup, based at Jackroyd Lane, Upper Hopton, is a small charity.

The playgroup has places available for children aged two and above.

It is open 9.30am to 12pm, Monday to Friday.
