DOZENS of rowers plan to row the London Marathon!

They haven't lost the plot - they are taking part in a Rowathon at the same time that the marathon is being run.

Kirklees Active Leisure's Rowathon takes place on Sunday, April 17, at The Mill Batley on Bradford Road.

The idea is for teams of up to 10 people to join up and row 26 miles between them, while runners try to notch up the same number of miles around the capital.

The event, in aid of Kirkwood Hospice at Dalton, was thought up by keen rower Chris Stanley, of Mirfield, who works as a fitness instructor at Spenborough Peak Physique gym, next door to the swimming pool in Liversedge.

Chris, 21, is in serious training as he intends to row all 26 miles on the day - by himself!

He said: "I enjoy rowing and like a challenge. I wanted to run the London Marathon, but I couldn't this year, so I came up with this idea instead.

"I have been training very hard, and hope to complete the distance within about three hours.

"We also want to do our bit to support the local hospice, which looks after people with terminal illnesses all over the district."

For more details ring Chris at Spenborough Peak Physique on 01274 335145, pop into any other Kirklees Active Leisure gym or ring Kirkwood Hospice on 01484 557911.

Sponsorship forms are available at all gyms, which are at Dewsbury and Huddersfield sports centres, Spenborough Peak Physique, Scissett Baths, Batley Baths and Batley Sports and Tennis Centre, and also from the hospice.
