PROGRESS on improving hospital cleanliness as part of efforts to tackle superbugs like MRSA was being outlined by the Government today.

Health Minister Lord Warner was explaining how hospitals and other NHS sites scored in inspections by Patient Environment Action Teams (PEAT).

The results are expected to show that in the first round of inspections this year 90 out of 1,138 NHS sites in England were rated as either poor or unacceptable in terms of cleanliness.

After being ordered to take action to improve their premises, further checks by the PEATs found that just 27 were now below standard.

The PEATs rate hospitals as either excellent, good, acceptable, poor or unacceptable.

Lord Warner and Chief Nursing Officer Christine Beasley were also expected to announce that uptake of the "clean your hands campaign" had increased since it was launched earlier this year.
