A PLAQUE has been unveiled at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary in memory of a much-loved colleague.

Kevin Conroy, known as “The Commander”, died just before Christmas after a short illness.

Mr Conroy, 52, from Marsh, had been a senior operating department practitioner at the hospital for 26 years.

At a poignant ceremony attended by about 50 family, friends and colleagues Mr Conroy’s partner, Helen Eastwood, was invited to draw back one of his favourite scarves to reveal the plaque in the theatres department.

Ms Eastwood works in the hospital’s cardiology unit.

She said: “Kevin would have been immensely proud. I do not think he realised just how much people thought of him.”

Dr Frank Jennings organised the ceremony.

He said: “Kevin was HRI and the HRI was Kevin.

“He was very proud of the place.”

Colleague and fishing friend Alec Philliskirk said: “When they made Kevin they broke the mould.

“He will never be forgotten.”

A buffet with drinks was held and guests were invited to share their memories of Mr Conroy.

There were smiles about his “diabolical” driving, the secret contents of his locker and his fishing exploits.
