A DERELICT pub will be demolished this week to make way for new social housing.

The Hare and Hounds on Fieldhead Lane, Birstall, has become an eyesore having been left empty since the pub closed in 2009.

This week the pub, which has recently been bought by Kirklees Community Association (KCA), will be razed to the ground to make way for new houses.

It is part of a multi-million pound project to regenerate Fieldhead Estate, which has already seen the addition of 139 new family homes.

The project has also involved Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing (KNH) renovating the 74 remaining flats on the estate.

KCA will have five houses on the pub site and two on the site compound where offices were sited for the main project.

They will be available through Kirklees Council’s housing register and managed by KNH.

In addition Keepmoat, a building company, will build five houses on the pub site for private sale.
