A HOUSING group condemned for not carrying out gas safety checks is celebrating a turn-around.
Huddersfield-based West Yorkshire Housing Association has extended its gas servicing and repair contract with Sayes and Co Ltd after a year of progress.
The association was criticised by the Audit Commission in 2004 for the management of gas servicing at hundreds of homes across Huddersfield.
The Government inspectors found the association did not meet the required national standard.
A commission spokesman said inspectors were worried that the association did not carry out safety checks properly.
But Mike Chappell, the association's finance director, said: "The renewal confirms the progress we have made in the last year or so.
"Working with Sayes since June 2004, we have completed 98.5% of our 2004/05 Land Lord Gas Safety Checks improving on the 95% achieved in 2003/04."
"But, while I believe we have a servicing and repairs service to be proud of, we are not resting on our laurels."
