MONEY is being made available for new homes and to bring empty properties onto the housing market.

Calderdale Council will next Monday consider spending £169,000 in 2012/13, as part of the New Homes Bonus (NHB).

The NHB is a Government incentive handed to all local authorities who increase housing supply.

The proposal involves a council spend of £169,000 in 2012/13, which they predict would generate an estimated total income through additional New Homes Bonus of £1,180,000 over the following six years.

A report, to be presented to cabinet members, says: “The theme behind all of the proposals is to make more homes available, be it through new build, conversion or bringing empty homes back into use.

“This in turn should generate additional tranches of New Homes Bonus for the authority, as well as addressing some of the sticking points currently being experienced in the housing market.”

The NHB is not “ringfenced” and the council can spent it in any department.
