The Shepley Health Centre is the best GP practice in Huddersfield – at least as far as patients are concerned.

The centre, on Jos Lane, has performed best of all practices in the region in a nationwide study.

The GP Patient Survey is a rolling poll based on the views of hundreds of thousands of surgery users.

It covers everything from the trust patients have in their doctor, to the attitude of reception staff and how easy it is to get an appointment.

Almost 99% of patients at the Shepley Health Centre said their overall experience of the practice was good, while 96% said they would recommend it to a newcomer to the area.

A further 94% said their GP listened to their problems properly, while 94% said they got sufficient time with the doctor.

Practice manager Melanie Hawthornthwaite said: “This is really exciting for us. In the challenging world of General Practice today we pride ourselves working as a team to meet the needs of our patients.”

The latest results from the GP Patient Survey take in two waves of data, collected in January to March 2015 and July to September 2015.

In all, 2.4m questionnaires were sent out and 854,000 patients responded with their views.

In order to rank surgeries, the Trinity Mirror Data Unit looked at seven key questions asked in the survey.

They were: the percentage of people who had a good experience making their last appointment; the percentage happy with waiting times at the surgery; the percentage who thought their GP gave them enough time; the percentage who thought their GP was listening to them; the percentage who ‘definitely’ had trust and confidence in their GP; the percentage who described their overall experience of the surgery as good; and the percentage who would recommend the surgery to newcomers to the area.

Some 7,709 surgeries across England were ranked in each category, then given an overall ranking based on the sum of those individual ranks.

Surgeries which had fewer than 50 responses from the survey were excluded on the basis the sample size was too small to draw significant conclusions.
