IF YOU live in a townhouse, a terrace or a semi, if a house adjoining yours comes up for sale, you automatically think: "We could buy it and knock through!"
Most such ideas don't go beyond idle daydreaming.
But Tony and Lisa Oxley, of 41 Claywell, Golcar, turned the brainwave into reality.
The couple bought their small mid-terrace house six years ago.
It had two bedrooms, a living room and a converted cellar kitchen.
They decorated and made their home immaculate - but when their elderly next-door neighbour sadly passed away, they knew they wanted to expand.
Scottish-born Lisa, who teaches English as a foreign language at Calderdale College, and Tony, a portfolio manager for a Leeds firm of stockbrokers, knew they wanted a dog - and they wanted to start a family, too.
And for that, they needed more room.
Now they have Henry, the dog, and Louis, a 19-week old son - and a home that's twice as big.
Tony, 35, explains: "When the house came on the market, we saw it the same day and it went from there.
"We knew someone who'd renovated property and we brought him on board to do the job.
"To help speed the process up, we did some work, too.
"When the dividing wall came down it was a strange experience seeing our house opened up to our neighbour's house.
"Overall, we kept to our costs and the work ended up cheaper than we expected."
Now the house has a second, bigger reception room that Tony devotes to watching DVDs in, and where Lisa, 33, plays piano.
A trapdoor leads to the cellar, which could be converted for more space.
Upstairs there is a large, third bedroom and a luxurious bathroom with wooden steps up to a stately tub!
Floors were coated with an extra-tough waterproof varnish.
Now the family are moving because they want a home with a bigger garden for their son to play in.
But they'll be sorry to leave Claywell. And they'd recommend knocking through to anyone.
Tony says: "It's not as daunting or expensive as you might think.
"And you have none of the upheaval or expense of moving."
* Their home is on the market at £175,000 with Bramleys estate agents.
