Tenants in Kirklees will pay their rent monthly rather than weekly, if plans go ahead.

An agenda ahead of next week’s Kirklees cabinet meeting outlines the changes.

If they go ahead, the swapping of weekly payments to a monthly rent will take effect from December 1.

Reasons for the change are cited as people now being paid in monthly salaries, and the introduction of Universal Credit (UC) meaning benefits will be issued on a monthly basis.

The report claims: “Times have changed and the majority of people are now paid a salary into a bank account on a four-weekly or monthly basis.

“The full introduction of Universal Credit (UC) will mean that the majority of Kirklees Council tenants will also receive their benefits on a calendar month basis.”

The report claims the move will help tenants to budget alongside their income, as well as helping KNH to “maximise the collection of rental income”.

The agenda adds that tenants may continue to pay their rent weekly if they decide.

A spokesperson for Kirklees Neighbourhood Housing said: “We hope that this change is one that tenants will adjust to, but we are not requiring tenants to make monthly payments at this point.

“If the change is approved by Cabinet, we will be contacting all our tenants to let them know what it means for them and how the change will be introduced.”

The cabinet meeting will be held on Tuesday, August 23.
