One good turn deserves another.

And in the case of Lockwood-based charity One Good Turn it’s a royal award at Buckingham Palace.

The charity, which provides essentials and advice for people in crisis, was one 187 British charities to scoop the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service and were invited to the palace to mark the achievement.

Founding volunteers Sophia and Tony Crawshaw, together with their son Jacob, met the Queen while enjoying a garden party and awards ceremony in the palace grounds.

The award – the highest award for small British voluntary groups – recognises outstanding community work.

Queen’s Award chairman and former newsreader Martyn Lewis said: “The judging panel for this year’s awards were struck by the quality and breadth of all the successful groups.

“The thousands of volunteers who give up spare time to help others in their community and to help solve problems demonstrate the best of democracy in action.”

One Good Turn will formally receive the award from the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire this summer.

Charity chairman Mr Crawshaw said: “‘Receiving this award is the icing on the cake for the charity in what has been a very exciting few years.

One Good Turn would like to thank Kirklees Council for their continued support and the outstanding volunteers, who without them, the charity would not exist.

“The charity has evolved through a need and demand for the service we provide from the communities across Kirklees.

“We would like to thank the general public and businesses for all their generous donations and support and look forward to working together with them in the future.”

One Good Turn, which offers everything from white goods to clothing for cash-strapped people, was founded in 2011.

The charity, now at Burbeary Road, has 60 volunteers.

One Good Turn branched into North Kirklees last year and is currently expanding into Calderdale.
