THREE men from Huddersfield were all found guilty of being involved in a vicious attack outside a nightclub which left one man brain damaged and another with a broken jaw.

But it is yet to be decided what part they each played.

Yesterday, brothers Govinder Rayt, of Kirkwood Drive, Dalton, and Kulvinder Rayt, of Church Street, Paddock, joined their friend Hardeep Singh in the dock at Leeds Crown Court.

Kulvinder Rayt, 25, had already been found guilty of two counts of grievous bodily harm and affray, and came up from the cells after being remanded in custody.

The jury found Hardeep Singh, 24, not guilty of grievous bodily harm with intent, but could not decide whether to convict him of grievous bodily harm without intent.

He was found guilty of affray.

Govinder Rayt, 21, had already been convicted of affray on Wednesday alongside his brother, but the jury was unable to decide whether he is guilty of two charges of grievous bodily harm.

Yesterday the jury was discharged and the prosecution will now decide whether to have a retrial with a different jury next week.

Kulvinder Rayt has been remanded in custody and will be sentenced when all the proceedings are finished. Govinder Rayt and Hardeep Singh have been released on bail.

On Wednesday Govinder broke down in tears as his brother Kulvinder was taken down to the cells.

The court had been told how a man was left with serious brain injuries and another with a broken jaw after an attack near the Gatecrasher night club where the men had been on Saturday, October 4 last year.

During the trial, they were told how the heads of Varinder Jassi and Gurmick Gosal were kicked and stamped on; a bottle smashed over the head of Balraj Dhillon, and how threats to kill had been made to Suresh Chumber.

Mr Michael Smith, prosecuting, had told the jury that the fight broke out after a row between the Rayt brother’s and Priya Mehmi, Govinder’s ex-girlfriend after they left the club on New Briggate.

Mr Jassi, who was a friend of Miss Mehmi, stepped in to help her and the defendants walked away. But they then returned to attack the four men, who all live in Pudsey, near Leeds.Mr Jassi was taken to hospital with a broken jaw while Mr Gossal spent several days in hospital as doctors feared his head and brain injuries were life-threatening.

The prosecution alleged that blood from the injured men was found on clothing belonging to the Rayt brothers.
