A MUM has spoken of her horror after her young son found a screw in a bag of fruit.

Jacob Humpleby, five, discovered the metal object among a bunch of Asda grapes while he watched a DVD of the film Transformers.

Mum Katie Payne, 26, said: “We were eating some grapes when my son said ‘I’m not eating these, Mummy. They’ve gone off, there’s bits in them.’

“Then he showed me the screw. It was lucky that he was paying attention – usually he would just be sitting there watching TV and eating grapes.”

Jacob found the screw in a 500g bag of Asda Smart Price white seedless grapes which his mother bought for £1.23 as part of a home delivery order of £36.

Ms Payne contacted the supermarket after the incident.

She said: “I called Asda and they said I should just throw the grapes away and they would give me a refund.

“I asked them if they were going to investigate where the screw had come from.”

Ms Payne, of New Hey Road in Mount, added that the incident had put her off using Asda’s home delivery service.

“I normally go up to the supermarket on Bradford Road but, because it’s close to Christmas and I’m 31 weeks pregnant, I decided to use their home delivery service.

“I won’t be using home delivery again and I will be checking their grapes before I buy them.”

An Asda spokeswoman apologised to Ms Payne last night.

“The quality of our products is our absolute priority and although we’re at a loss to understand how this object could have found its way into our grapes, we would always want to investigate further,” she said.

“We’re very sorry that Ms Payne didn’t receive the service we would expect on this occasion and we are contacting her directly to look into the issue further.”
