SHE is the star of the current hit TV drama Broadchurch.

And now it has been confirmed that Huddersfield actress Jodie Whittaker has landed a role in what is expected to be another major series.

She has signed up to star in Sky 1’s new eight-part drama The Smoke.

It is a drama series focussing on life at a London fire station.

It is being put together by Kudos Film and Television which is the company which has produced previous hit shows including Spooks, Hustle, Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes.

The new series has been created by Lucy Kirkwood, who is the writer of Skins.

Whittaker is being lined up to play the part of Trish, who is the girlfriend of White Watch firefighter Kev.

He has been injured and betrayed while tackling the worst fire of his career but returns to work from the station.

The role of Kev is played by Jamie Bamber, star of Law & Order UK.

Anne Mensah, head of drama for Sky, said: “We wanted to bring a new, modern view of heroism to Sky 1 HD.

“The Smoke was a perfect fit. It has all the huge-scale action and adrenaline that a show about fire can bring to the screen, but in Lucy’s hands there is also a beautiful depth and complexity to the characterisation.

“This is a show that asks real questions about what it means to be a man in today’s world”.

Jane Featherstone, of Kudos, said: “You’ve never seen a fire show like this before”.

Filming on the new series is expected to start shortly and it is likely to hit the TV screens early in 2014.

Whittaker, who grew up in Skelmanthorpe, is currently starring in the crime drama Broadchurch, playing the mother of a young boy who has been killed.

She appears opposite former Doctor Who star David Tennant.

Her film background includes the film Venus opposite Peter O’Toole, the cult classic Attack The Block and Perrier’s Bounty.

On TV she has starred in Cranwell, Tess of the D’Urbervilles and Marchlands.
