Wacky woollies were everywhere yesterday thanks to Age UK’s latest campaign.

Even the famous Harold Wilson statue in St George’s Square, Huddersfield, sported a hat for the charity’s Bobble Day.

Hundreds of people and businesses across Kirklees and Calderdale joined in with the efforts, including Valli Opticians.

Staff at its Lockwood, Meltham, Honley, Almondbury, Mytholmroyd and Hebden Bridge shops went to work in their most wonderful winter attire to support the campaign.

Bobble Day raises money and increases awareness about the importance of older people staying warm and well in cold weather.

As many as 200 older people die needlessly every single day when the weather is at its worst, according to Age UK.

Valli Opticians hopes its teams’ efforts will help highlight the difficulties faced by older people and contribute to the prevention of unnecessary winter deaths.

Moin Valli, managing director of Valli Opticians, said: “We were shocked to hear how many older people die in Britain due to cold weather, so we wanted to do what we could to support Age UK’s campaign.”

Other supporters across the area arranged tea mornings, sponsored winter walks and other cold-weather-related events.
