CANON Catherine Ogle says Mother’s Day is a time for reflecting on all our family relationships.

The Huddersfield minister said the original ideas behind the day are often forgotten.

The mum-of-one said: “The day has become commercial which is shown by the fact it has become Mother’s Day instead of Mothering Sunday.

“Mothering Sunday goes back to the days when young men and women worked away from home.

“They never got to see their mums during the year but Mothering Sunday was the time when they would be allowed home and also to their home church.”

Reverend Ogle will be taking a special Mothering Sunday service at St Peter’s Parish Church tomorrow.

She said: “The day is an opportunity to say thank you to our mothers and extend it to all our family relationships like grandmas and those involved in caring for us.

“And dads too. I’m so impressed with the young dads nowadays.

“Some of them can just be so brilliant they give their children so much time and attention.

“The greatest gift you can give is the gift of time.”
