CARERS who are unpaid and looking after a loved-one can build up a full basic state pension.

There are 110,105 carers in Huddersfield that may benefit from the National Insurance credit scheme.

In April this year the new Carer’s Credit will be introduced and will count towards basic and second state pensions.

Carers who are looking after someone for at least 20 hours a week are being urged to come forward.

Minister of State for Pensions, Angela Eagle, said: “The state pension is everyone’s foundation of financial security in later life and therefore, it’s only right that caring for others should be counted towards it.”
