A CHEF died suddenly due to an enlarged heart, an inquest heard yesterday.

Claire Bretton, 30, a chef at The George Hotel, died at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary after collapsing at her Moldgreen home on December 17, Huddersfield Coroner’s Court was told.

Miss Bretton, who weighed 18st 5lb, had complained of swelling in her foot two days before her death.

The court heard how Miss Bretton had been sleeping on the sofa when she suddenly coughed and sat up.

She was dead on arrival at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary. The cause of death was dilated cardiomyopathy, the inquest heard.

Coroner Roger Whittaker said Miss Bretton had, on the balance of probability, died from an enlarged heart with obesity as a secondary cause of death.

He recorded a verdict of death by natural causes.
