A MAN dressed in a fake police uniform duped his way into a pensioner’s home.

But he ran off after he was confronted by the 86-year-old woman’s son.

The bogus officer appeared at the back door of the woman’s home on Lawrence Road, Marsh, wearing police constable style clothing and holding a walkie talkie.

When she answered the door he told her he was looking for someone who had been acting suspiciously in the area.

He said that he needed to check the doors and windows of her home.

The suspect was allowed into the home and began to search it.

As he went upstairs, he was confronted by the victim’s 49-year old son.

The suspect backed down the stairs and out of the back door, running away in an unknown direction.

No-one was hurt and nothing was taken during the incident.

Detectives are now appealing for witnesses to the incident which happened last Friday at about 11.30am.

The suspect was a white man in his mid-thirties, clean shaven and with short, mousy hair.

He was around 5ft 9ins tall and of medium build.

He wore a white shirt, a tie and a woolly V-neck jumper and smart trousers.

The clothing did not have any police badges or markings on it and the suspect did not have any ID.

A police spokesman, said: “This bogus caller is committing a serious offence just by posing a police officer.

“The fact that he called at the home of an elderly woman makes the incident even more serious as, had the victim’s son not been at home at the time, it is likely the victim could have been burgled or robbed.

“We are therefore treating this as an extremely serious offence and would urge anyone with information to contact us.”

Any witnesses or anyone with information should call Detective Constable Divek Ubhi at Huddersfield CID via 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
