HUDDERSFIELD'S Asda store on Bradford Road has been closed following an attack by a gang of yobs.

The 24-hour superstore shut at after around 10pm on Tuesday evening following an attack.

Police vans containing officers in protective equipment were at the store directing traffic away.

The car park close to the supermarket was littered with broken glass.

On Twitter, council leader Mehboob Khan said after the incident:  "At ASDA store with police, damage to windows, looters foiled by police, TVs recovered, no arrests."

The store will be monitored by police overnight.

There were also unconfirmed reports of fires in Sheepridge and Dalton where wheelie bins and rubbish are believed to have been torched.

Reports also suggest firefighters were attacked when putting out fires.

Reports of attacks on town centre stores in the run up to midnight appeared to be false as the council leader also confirmed that CCTV operators had nothing out of the ordinary to report in central Huddersfield.
