A HUDDERSFIELD man is in hospital with serious spinal injuries after a car crash.

The 34-year-old, who has not been named, was badly hurt when he veered off a road and hit a lamp-post before ending up in a field.

The accident happened on May 1 in Whams Road at Crow Edge, near Barnsley.

Police said the driver lost control of his Vauxhall Astra on a right hand bend as he travelled in the direction of Sheffield.

Police said the driver suffered severe spinal injuries in the smash and was taken to the Northern General Hospital, Sheffield, where he has been detained.

He was later arrested on suspicion of theft, drink driving and driving whilst disqualified.
