HUDDERSFIELD Royal Infirmary’s state-of-the-art unit has gained full accreditation within months of opening.

After inspection, the £3.8 million endoscopy unit was awarded the accreditation for five years and was also praised for the first class available care.

The facilities are believed to be the most modern of their type in the country. The assessors congratulated the unit on being “patient focussed, innovative and for delivering quality standards”.

The newly-built endoscopy unit at Calderdale Royal Hospital, Halifax, was also praised for its high levels of care.

Divisional director for medicine Dr Ashwin Verma said the fact that the units were so patient-centred in every aspect led to the fantastic rating.

He said:“There has only ever been one focus and that is providing the best care for the patients.”

Around 6,500 procedures are set to take place at the new unit annually.

It will provide care to patients who need an internal examination using an endoscope across a range of specialities such as gastrointestinal medicine and surgery, gynaecology, urology and respiratory medicine.

The unit that opened in March will also provide diagnostic tests and therapies such as the removal of polyps and the insertion of stents and feeding tubes.
