IN our second visit to young people’s sporting events and achievements in Huddersfield, the emphasis shifts to athletics, and thus generally to teenagers and young adults.
In the 1950s – the picture above was taken in 1954 – there seems to have been a reluctance to tackle live action shots.
Cameras were slower, bulkier and less efficient at capturing motion.
It’s not known who took this shot – presumably it was an Examiner photographer – but he or she captured the moment perfectly, as four fifth-year Huddersfield College youngsters take the hurdles during their annual sports day.
Other attempts at depicting sports action, as this edition shows, were not always as spectacular. Look out for E Dorsland’s theatrical pose at the shot putt, for instance.
Nevertheless, the overall picture is of youngsters enthusiastically taking part in a wide variety of athletic activities, usually well supported by parents, teachers and friends.
