INEVITABLY, so close to Christmas, the thoughts of children of this time in 1990 turned towards seasonal celebrations.

Our pictures this week demonstrate that young choirs and musicians were warming up for their Chrstmas performances – but Meltham and Hade Edge pupils were giving their activities a medieval slant.

Hade Edge children were looking at the ancient story of St George and the Dragon, a central theme of mumming plays, while St Patrick’s juniors chose the 17th century, exploring its food, costumes, games and music with their visit to Clarke Hall, Wakefield.

Meltham County Primary School children went for something similar in their medieval Christmas tableau.

This seasonal slant on activities didn’t prevent Mount Pleasant and Meltham JIN School doing a little pre-Christmas tidying up – and either winning awards for it or earning a little cash – nor did it prevent Brownies and Beavers getting on with the business of trying out new neckties and celebrating troop anniversaries.
