FAMILIES from across Huddersfield were today taking part in a big demonstration in West Yorkshire.

They joined people from all over the north heading for Leeds and a lunchtime protest over plans to shut the children’s heart surgery unit.

The decision taken earlier this month has already been challenged by many of the region’s MPs, who are pledging to get it reversed by Health Secretary Andrew Lansley.

Today it was the turn of the families including Gaynor Bearder, of Linthwaite, and her son Joel who underwent lifesaving surgery at the Leeds unit.

They and many others travelled to Leeds for the noon protest march.

Sharon Cheung, director of the Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, said: “The decision to close the unit was an outrage.

“Today’s demonstration will be peaceful but we are determined our voices will be heard. Future generations will be affected by this decision and we do not want this region to be disadvantaged.”
