HUDDERSFIELD Giants are aiming to climb to the top of Super League.

But meanwhile, their wives and girlfriends have another mountainous challenge ahead of them.

They plan to climb Ben Nevis as part of a massive charity effort which aims to raise at least £10,000.

The Rugby League Wags – wives and girlfriends – will be foregoing spa treatments and fashion shopping to tackle the 4,409-ft high peak – Britain’s highest mountain.

Twelve women from the Huddersfield club will join wives and partners from players at the other 13 Super League clubs in the Nevis challenge on July 20.

It is being organised on behalf of the Life For A Kid Foundation, which has aligned itself very closely to the world of rugby league.

Life For A Kid Foundation was set up in March 2009 with the aim of helping children under the age of 16 by offering funds and equipment to help them lead a better life.

It also helps children who require lifesaving or life-changing operations. The Foundation was set up on the back of the fundraising efforts of the Great Britain Rugby League All Stars.

The Nevis challenge was taken up by Jenna Brough, wife of Giants’ skipper Danny, and she quickly recruited other willing walkers.

The Giants’ team for the challenge will be Jenna Brough, Laura Robinson (Luke Robinson), Amanda Box (Brett Ferres), Grace Rider (Shaun Lunt), Emily Archdale (Jamie Cording), Lindsay Grix (Scott Grix), Siobhan Spencer (Joe Wardle), Victoria Kopczak (Craig Kopczak), Amy Cawthra (Ben Blackmore), Rebecca Livesey (Larne Patrick), Laura Howley (Michael Lawrence) and Sarah Jones (Matt Dawson).

Jenna said: “The charity appealed for help from Super League clubs and we took it up. There should be at least 100 of us from all the clubs attempting the climb – and in July we’re hoping the weather will be a good bit better than it is now.

“Some of us go the gym to keep fit, but I don’t think any of us have done much climbing or trekking like we will need on Ben Nevis. They say the climb can take up to eight hours but we are all looking forward to it.

“We have already been given £500 sponsorship by Bond It, who are one of the Giants’ sponsors, and we are appealing for others to get involved. There will be room on our tee-shirts for sponsors’ names if they want to back us.

“We have also organised a family fun day on May 5 at The Star in Fenay Bridge, with bands, a barbecue, face-painting and a bouncy castle.”
