Huddersfield’s wannabe racing star of the future Daniel Lloyd met up with Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton.

And it meant a perfect start for the new season for Scammonden-based Lloyd, the ELF Renault Clio Cup rookie.

The meeting took place for the launch of the 2009 Formula Kart Stars and CIK-FIA Stars International Karting Championships – formerly known as the BRDC Stars of Tomorrow.

Teenager driving sensation Lloyd, a former BRDC Scholarship winner, was invited along to the event at PF International Circuit, Grantham, where Vodafone McLaren Mercedes ace Hamilton – a fellow former Stars competitor – was the guest of honour.

Daniel, who this year graduates to the British Touring Car Championship-supporting ELF Renault Clio Cup for his second season of car racing action, said he thoroughly enjoyed the day and relished the opportunity to meet Britain’s latest F1 World Champion.

“It was a pleasure to be involved with the launch of the Formula Kart Stars Championships and to have the chance to meet and chat with Lewis.

“I really enjoyed myself. Lewis is an inspiration and is very genuine.

“The only disappointment for me was that his girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger, of the Pussycat Dolls, wasn’t there!

“It was a great privilege to be involved in the Formula Kart Stars launch. Winning the old BRDC scholarship enabled me to make the step-up to car racing in 2008 in the Ginetta Junior Championship, so it proves how important the Stars championships can be for a young driver’s career.”

Daniel made a karting return at the PFI track when he seized the opportunity to enjoy a test outing in the new kart – and got the fastest lap time.

The new Clio Cup season begins on April 4 at Brands Hatch, Kent.
