VICTIMS of domestic violence are being given extra care in court.

The magistrates’ courts in Huddersfield and Dewsbury are among a small number to win special accreditation.

The courts provide separate entrances and waiting rooms for victims and specially trained advisers and magistrates to offer support.

Kirklees is one of just five areas nationally to have its courts accredited as Specialist Domestic Violence Courts.

Clr Peter O’Neill, Kirklees Council Cabinet member for safety said: “I am pleased that Kirklees has been recognised for the positive work that has been taking place.

“The improvements will help people who have experienced domestic violence and had the courage to come forward, to get the support they need while going through the criminal justice system.”

Kirklees has also appointed an independent domestic violence advocate, Julie Holdsworth, who will help victims.
