THE Church of England has appointed a Huddersfield man as their first ever lay Asian canon in history.

Yaqub Masih, from Pakistan, was handed the prestigious role at a ceremony at Wakefield Cathedral, in front of 1,000 worshippers.

The financial broker, from Salendine Nook, is already secretary general of the UK Christian Asian Fellowship.

His new position involves responsibility for the Cathedral and organising events.

Proud Yaqub said: “It is an honour to be appointed to such a role. It is important to highlight Asian Christians because people in this country see an Asian person and assume they are Hindu, Sikh or Muslim and that’s not always the case.”
