A BLAST of wintry weather sweeping the country is expected to send temperatures plummeting to as low as -5C, bringing more snow and icy conditions, forecasters said today.

But Huddersfield is expected to escape the worst.

Eastern and south-east England will be the worst affected over the next couple of days, with Kent likely to see the heaviest falls with up to 10cm of snow.

But Huddersfield weather expert Paul Stevens said the worst the town could expect was a dusting of snow in some areas, and nights with temperatures dropping to -3C.

However, he warned the early part of next week could see more sleet and snow returning.
