Huddersfield's outspoken MP Barry Sheerman is standing by his strong comments about “parasites”.

The veteran Labour MP has sparked a social media storm over his comments regarding the so-called Northern Powerhouse.

He claimed people in the South of England “live parasitically” on the efforts of the North, and urged the Government to “stop patronising” people over its Northern Powerhouse project.

Last night there was both support and criticism over Mr Sheerman’s forceful views.

But the man himself is unrepentant.

“We have always been a powerhouse in the north and people have to realise that.

“The manufacturers of this region create much of the wealth for this country. We have the world’s finest pottery from Stoke, the world’s finest textiles from Huddersfield and West Yorkshire, and the country’s top engineers.

“But it seems we are still patronised by people like George Osborne over the Northern Powerhouse project.

“I want them to stop that attitude and appreciate what we have in the north”.

An Examiner online poll asking if people agreed with Mr Sheerman backed the MP.

Steve Lufc Waterhouse: 83% think hes right. taxes in yorkshire have helped pay for london projects such as cross rail, olympic stadium, millenium dome etc and they wont even help leeds englands third largest city finance a better transport system

Kieran Kinder: Yorkshire has a larger economy than Scotland employs more people has more residents so yes southern parasites are feasting on our success by using taxes and revenue taken from Yorkshire to fund infrastructure and building down south.

Dezra Davies: I cannot believe that MP’s are what we think of as well educated people who we put our trust in then we find out they are really uneducated pigs who should never be allowed to speak in public.
