THE HEARTBROKEN mum of a 37-year-old man who died in a pie factory explosion today paid tribute to her son.
Margaret Townend was among mourners visiting the devastating scene of Andrew Jones pie factory, at Old Leeds Road, as the police cordons came down yesterday.
She and husband Steven Townend – who run Legends Diner in Lockwood – laid flowers to mark the loss of her son David Cole, from Halifax.
The dad-of-two died in a gas blast which brought the roof tumbling down with it.
Another worker, 24-year-old father-of-one Marcus Cartwright, of Crosland Moor, remains in Leeds General Infirmary with serious injuries.
Margaret broke down as she surveyed the rubble. She said: “It is just awful. I just don’t know what happened here. I can’t believe he is gone.”
Shocked pie business owner Andrew Jones and his family were also among those who came to pay their respects.
Janet Portious, who runs J’s Cafe in Birkby, laid flowers at the scene. She said: “It is so sad, it is sickening. We get our supplies from them and they are all wonderful men who work here. We’re shocked.”
