WORSHIPPERS gathered to celebrate the birthday of the Prophet Mohammed.

The date is celebrated throughout the world and the Masjid Abu Bakr Mosque in Huddersfield was no exception, with more than 600 paying their respects.

H R Babar, who was among the worshippers, said: “Muslims celebrate this festival joyfully.

“As well as recounting the Prophet's life, salutations and songs in his praise are recited.

“In some countries, streets and mosques are decorated and illuminated at night.

“Famous readers of the nasheed (a traditional Islamic chant) came along such as Milad Raza and Nasar Kareem and many young members of the community recited nasheeds in celebration.

“Scholars also did speeches to illustrate to young and old the importance of this day in both Urdu and in English.”

The festivities included the showing of hair, the Muey Mubarak and food, including a cake, was given at the end.

Fellow worshipper Haji Shafi, added: “The event makes people very happy.

“People across the world celebrate different days but it takes place in the same month.”
