Parents have been ordered to pay hundreds of pounds in fines and court costs after their children failed to attend school.

Three mums were prosecuted at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

One, the mother of twins, blamed behavioural issues on her children failing to turn up for classes at their Huddersfield school.

The court heard that her daughters regularly missed school between February and July last year.

Magistrates ordered her to pay a total of £120 in fines, £100 court costs and £20 victim surcharge.

They also issued the mum with a parenting the order for both of the children.

Under the order she must comply with various requirements, including counselling and informing her children’s school promptly of any absences.

Another mum was hauled before the court after her 15-year-old daughter was absent from school for 76 out of a possible 140 sessions.

The Dewsbury-based mum has been prosecuted previously after her teenager missed school.

She claimed that she had done her best with her daughter and personally taken her to school.

Magistrates fined her £110 and the mum must also pay £201 prosecution costs and £20 victim surcharge.

One mum landed in trouble after taking her child out of a school for a holiday without permission from teachers.

The Batley woman took her six-year-old son out of school between September 21 and October 2.

Court proceedings were activated after she failed to pay a £60 fixed penalty noticed which then increased to £120.

The mum was ordered by magistrates to pay £201 court costs, £200 fine and £20 victim surcharge.
