RAIL commuters in Huddersfield face big fare hikes from January.

Workers who let the train take the strain will be hit in the pocket again next year.

This month the Government announced an inflation and pay rise-busting fares rise of 6.2%. Some fares on certain routes could go up by a staggering 11%.

The Campaign for Better Transport claims those with annual season tickets face big rises.

According to figures calculated from prices on the Rail Saver website 12-month season tickets for journeys between Huddersfield and Leeds will rise by £73.90, up from £1,192.

Huddersfield to Sheffield annual passes currently cost £1,972 and will go up £122.26 while Huddersfield to Wakefield (£896) rise by £55.55.

Huddersfield to Bradford tickets increase from £828 to £879.34, a rise of £51.34.

Rail fare increases are based on the retail price index for July, which this year reached 3.2%, plus a further 3%.

New charges will come into force on January 1.

The Campaign for Better Transport has set up an online petition aiming to force a u-turn on the fares.

Campaigns director Richard Hebditch urged people to oppose the rises and said: “We already pay some of the highest fares in the world and if prices are allowed to rise three times faster than inflation passengers will be priced off the railways.

“When the Government tried to implement a similar policy last year we successfully campaigned for them to back down.

“We want them to do the same this year. There is still time to force a u-turn.”

Stephen Joseph, the campaign’s chief executive, urged the Government to think again.

“If the Government sticks by its policy, rail fares will rise three times faster than salaries,” he said.

“With the economy flat-lining, this is untenable.

“The Government knows they can’t continue to hit commuters and that’s why they postponed the fuel duty increase.

“Now they need to do the same for rail users.”
