A JAZZ label formed in Huddersfield is going global.

The people behind Jellymould Jazz have signed a deal to distribute the label’s artists as far away as Japan and Taiwan.

For the label, based in Almondbury, it is a recognition of the talent on their books.

Dominic Sales, of Jellymould Jazz, said: “This is a massive step forward for our little label from Huddersfield.

“They say it is harder to get a distribution deal than it is to get a record deal and it means that our artists – all from the north – will receive worldwide exposure.”

They signed a deal with Harmonia Mundi after attending the international music conference Midem in Cannes at the end of January.

Jellymould was founded five years ago by musician and composer Dominic Sales and Phil Gregory with support from Arts Council England.

Its aim was to give jazz artists the opportunity to record, promote and tour their first album.

Dominic added: “We are delighted that Harmonia Mundi has taken on Jellymould and will distribute our catalogue.

“We are in very good company as they work with some fantastic labels from all over the world that we very much respect and admire.”

As a composing and production team, Jellymould’s work has been broadcast and performed on the BBC, Channel 4, ITV, The Royal Opera House and at the Edinburgh Festival.

Giles Quinnell, jazz and world music specialist at Harmonia Mundi, added: “British jazz is enjoying a prolonged period of exceptional artistic productivity, which Jellymould is very much a part of.

“We are looking forward to assisting the growth of this dynamic label, and working with the fine artists they represent.”

And the deal has come at a good time for them – they have two releases coming out soon, one by a band who will take to the LBT stage later this month.

Home Of The Brave, a Leeds-based jazz band, are set to play the LBT Cellar in Huddersfield on March 25.

The Cowboy-influenced jazz quartet are led by multi-instrumentalist Richard Ormrod and feature world-renowned free improv percussionist Paul Hession.

Richard plays tenor sax, soprano sax, clarinet, bass clarinet, vocals, trumpet, accordion and whistles, Jonny Flockton is on electric guitar and desert air, Rus Pearson plays double bass, laptop and Mexican laughter and Paul Hession is on drum kit, gunshots and horses.
