RESIDENTS have been urged to check if they are paying too much council tax.

A Kirklees Council spokeswoman yesterday reminded people about the free service.

She said: “The council has received numerous enquiries from taxpayers who have received leaflets or calls from firms offering rebanding services for a fee.

“This literature sometimes includes examples of local addresses where the band has been successfully reduced.

“Although these companies are acting within the law, their literature fails to make it clear to residents that they could challenge their valuation band themselves, totally free of charge.

“Where taxpayers have genuine concerns that their home might be in the wrong band, they should contact the Valuation Office Agency and ask for the banding to be reviewed.

“Making a formal proposal is easier than people think.”

Calderdale residents can find out for free if they are paying too much council tax.

Calderdale Council’s revenues and benefits service manager Yvonne Kear yesterday urged people to check.

“There’s no reason why people can’t check their valuation band for free,” she said.
