GRITTING crews today issued a plea to people in Huddersfield: ‘Help us’.
Teams of roadworkers were planning to move on to the ice and snow-covered roads of the housing estates today and tomorrow.
But they know they face big problems because of parked cars and have urged people to move them.
The crews will have to bring in heavy equipment because many of the roads are packed with several inches of snow and ice and have now appealed to residents to try and move their vehicles. It is the first time since the snowfalls of last Sunday that gritting crews have been able to move on to the secondary roads.
Up to now they have had to concentrate on major routes and even then, have faced a tough battle.
They have not been helped by temperatures which have plunged as low as minus 5 deg and could fall even lower at the weekend, with minus 8 degrees forecast for roads above Holmfirth.
Yesterday only the M62 was open with other routes all shut by snow.
