HUDDERSFIELD Royal Infirmary has been given a new look.

A total of £14,000 has been spent revamping the original obelisk at the bottom of the hospital drive – which has been there since HRI opened in 1966.

The old, brown-tiled monument which faces on to Acre Street, Lindley, has been replaced with modern stainless steel coating, new lettering and special lighting.

Money from the hospital’s charitable funds has paid for the makeover.

Estates and facilities director Frank Gibbons, said: “This is long overdue and the new-look sign is a great improvement to our presence on Acre Street.

“It is also a small part of our plans for major improvements and investment at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary in the coming months.”

He said work was also underway to replace the existing timber windows with double glazing, refurbish the cafe, restaurant and toilet facilities and replace the existing coal-fired boilers with gas boilers to reduce carbon emissions.

Extra parking has also been created and work is due to start refurbishing on Ward 10.
